Clean Water Wells For Mully Children’s Family Orphanage

Drilling clean water wells in Eastern Africa is the flagship program of Hearts and Hands for Humanity. The well sites are strategically placed to serve communities in extreme need or to partner with other existing nonprofits that are doing good work. Sometimes these wells are installed at a primary school which allows children to attend the school. Sometimes they are installed on a local farm to help provide crops for the community. On more than one occasion, a well was installed at an orphanage to help children in need.

Mully Children’s Family is an orphanage with “the world’s largest family”. They have 11 locations across Kenya and Tanzania which provide housing and training programs for thousands of children. Wells that serve these locations will also provide water for the surrounding communities where thousands more live.

Mully Children’s Family was founded by Dr. Charles Mulli, Phd, and his wife Esther Mulli. As a child, Charles Mulli lived in an abusive environment until he woke up one morning to find that his family had abandoned him. For over ten years he begged to survive and was close to taking his own life. Charles Mulli’s journey began with a singular, radical decision: to sacrifice his own comfort to rescue orphans from the slums of Kenya. While critics initially dismissed his actions as irrational and called him crazy, his persistence revealed a deep sense of purpose. Today, those who witness the work of the Mully Children’s Family (MCF) encounter an organization defined by profound dedication and tangible results. They can instantly feel that he is a man inspired by God and doing God’s work to care for these children.

What began with Mully opening his private home to street children has evolved into a sprawling network across 11 locations in Kenya and Tanzania. This model transcends traditional aid by fostering independence. MCF facilities are engineered to be self-sustaining, integrating large-scale agricultural programs and vocational training directly into daily life.

Students serve as the primary architects of their own environment—construction trainees maintain the infrastructure, while those in the hospitality track manage the organization’s guest quarters and dining facilities. Beyond essential trades, the children engage in diverse enrichment programs, including music, dance, acrobatics, and competitive sports. By replacing abandonment with a comprehensive ecosystem of learning and development, this organization provides thousands of children with the tools to build a future defined by agency rather than hardship.

Charles Mulli’s inspired search for water at their first location, as depicted in the documentary, was a defining moment for the Mully Children’s Family organization. Faced with the immediate threat of drought at their original site, that single act of faith provided the foundation for their survival and the self-sustaining agricultural model they rely on today. Now, as the organization grows across 11 locations in Kenya and Tanzania, that need for clean water is more critical than ever. To ensure their future, a new initiative is underway to provide 15 clean water wells, securing a reliable, life-sustaining water source for every child in their care.

Hearts and Hands for Humanity has partnered with Mully Children’s Family with the goal to drill 15 wells, which will provide thousands of children with clean, drinkable water. The wells will also supply water to those who live in the surrounding communities.

Normally, Hearts and Hands for Humanity can install a clean water well for as little as $10,000, which is 1/4 the cost of wells provided by other charities, using a custom-designed human-powered drill. This drill can reach aquifers as deep as 250 feet to provide clean water in many areas of East Africa. Yet, the Mully Children’s Family locations require much deeper wells. This means that a drill truck is required to drill these wells; they require more pipe, and they need an upscaled solar pump.

As part of this effort, a participant who has travelled on a Humanitarian Safari with H3 has started a Drill Truck Fundraiser so that Hearts and Hands for Humanity can own one of these drill trucks, which will scale the mobility and drilling capacity, as well as allow us to drill in more rocky areas where a human-powered drill cannot penetrate.

Hearts and Hands for Humanity partnered with Mully Children’s Family in 2023. There are now two wells completed, yet there is still much to be done.

The first of 15 wells was completed for Mully Children’s Family in Ludwar Kenya in January of 2024. Notice the use of the drill truck, elevated water tank, and solar powered water pump

The second of 15 wells began construction in October 2025 in Ndalani, Kenya, also with the use of a drill truck. This well is now completed.

Well #3 will provide life-saving water for approximately 5,000 pepole in Yatta, Keya. This neighboring community to a Mully Children’s Family facility lacks access to clean water and currently relies on an open river at the base of the mountain. The cost of this well is estmated to be $39,717.

Well #4 will also be in Yatta, Kenya, supplying the Mully Children’s Family facility directly. This well will be deeper. The cost of this well is estimated to be $43,858.

The current estimate for the remaining wells is $20,000 each. Wells #5-10 will be located near Well #2 in Ndalani, Kenya. The entire community is at serious risk due to contaminated water. Each of these wells is urgently needed.

Wells #11-15 are still in a planning stage.
